ΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΟ ΛΙΓΚ ΓΥΝΑΙΚΩΝ: Πρωταθλήτρια η Σερβία

H Σερβία κατέκτησε το Ευρωπαϊκό Λιγκ Γυναικών και διατήρησε τα «σκήπτρα» της στη διοργάνωση για δεύτερη συνεχόμενη χρονιά. Η ομάδα του Ζόραν Τέρζιτς επικράτησε με 3-1 σετ (25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 25-22) της Βουλγαρίας στον τελικό του φάιναλ φορ που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο «Baskent Sport Hall» της Αγκυρας και απέκτησε το δικαίωμα συμμετοχής στο FIVB World Grand Prix της επόμενης σεζόν. To χάλκινο μετάλλιο κατέκτησε η διοργανώτρια Τουρκία, με νίκη 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-15) επί του Ισραήλ.

The first ever EEVZA U-18 Championships kicked off in Yantarniy

A day after the end of the second stop of the Russian national tour the next of three events scheduled for this week – the EEVZA U-18 Beach Volleyball Championships – did start yesterday in the Kaliningrad Region.
This is the very first time ever that such a competition is being held and the organization was allotted to the Russian Volleyball Federation. The venue is the city of Yantarniy, located in the Kaliningrad region. This tournament in Russia will be the main rehearsal for a flurry of young athletes before the 2010 CEV U-18 European Championships which are set to run in early August in Porto.
A total of five and six teams did register for the women’s and men’s competition respectively. Apart from the hosting country, Estonia, Belarus and Latvia are also represented in Yantarniy. According to the competition formula, boys and girls will play a round robin and then matches for the gold and bronze medals will be held. The medalists of the first ever EEVZA U18 Championships will be known on July 21.
On Tuesday, each team had to play two or three matches. To the delight of the local audience, the leaders after the first competition day were representatives of the Russian team. In the boys’ division Kiriyenko and Andrianov did not suffer any single defeat, as did also Narmania/Poltoranina among the girls, as they also won three games in a row. Two more couples did also show pretty good results, namely Korovka/Zhirkov and Sorokina/Dabija. Both teams added to their score two victories and one defeat. The same results were clipped by Latvians Pekmanish/Natrinsh. The Baltic athletes beat their teammates Buyvids/Andersons, as well as the Estonian team Soo/Järv, losing only to the leaders Kiriyenko/Andrianov.

ΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΟ ΛΙΓΚ ΑΝΔΡΩΝ: Πρωταθλήτρια η Πορτογαλία

Η Πορτογαλία κατέκτησε τον τίτλο στο φετινό Ευρωπαϊκό Λιγκ Ανδρών με νίκη 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21) επί της Ισπανίας στον τελικό του φάιναλ φορ που πραγματοποιήθηκε το Σάββατο 17 Ιουλίου στην Γκουανταλαχάρα. Αυτό ήταν το πρώτο χρυσό μετάλλιο στη διοργάνωση για την ομάδα του Χουάν Ντίαζ στον «ιβηρικό εμφύλιο» που διεξήχθη στην ισπανική πόλη. Οι Πορτογάλοι πήραν έτσι «γλυκιά εκδίκηση» για τον τελικό του 2007, όταν ως διοργανωτές είχαν υποχρεωθεί σε ήττα από τους Ισπανούς με 3-2.
Ο τεχνικός των νικητών Χουάν Ντίαζ, τόνισε: «Οταν η ομάδα σου παίζει καλά καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του Ευρωπαϊκού Λιγκ, τότε αισθάνεσαι φανταστικά ως προπονητής. Είμαι περήφανος για τους παίκτες μου, άξιζαν τον τίτλο».
«Είμαστε πολύ χαρούμενοι που καταφέραμε να ανέβουμε στο ψηλότερο σκαλί του βάθρου στην τρίτη μας συμμετοχή σε φάιναλ φορ, μετά από μία δεύτερη και μία τρίτη θέση» δήλωσε ο αρχηγός των νικητών και καλύτερος επιθετικός, Ζοάο Χοσέ.
Την τρίτη θέση κατέλαβε η Τουρκία, επικρατώντας με 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-13) της Ρουμανίας στον μικρό τελικό.

Finland to vie for final round in Tampere

The City of Tampere has warmly welcomed the participants in Pool E that will be vying for the qualification to the final round of the 2010 CEV Women’s Junior European Championship. In Tampere’s “Ice Hall” the heat is on from Friday to Sunday between Finland, Belarus, Poland and The Netherlands. The hall is the same where Finland is used to play the matches of the FIVB World League.
The best two of the four participating teams will go advance to the final round to be played in Serbia in early September. On the first day of the tournament The Netherlands will face Belarus at 4 pm local time and the home team Finland will match against Poland.
Finnish head coach Mariliisa Salmi, also a long time setter in the Finnish national team, says her team is not an outsider in this tournament. "Technically we are not very far from the other teams. We have had a good preparation. But in Finland we don't have yet the culture of qualifying in group of this age, but maybe now it is our time", stated Salmi.

Austria celebrates sensational victory against Turkey

As predicted yesterday, today's game was very enthralling and Austria showed their real potential in their last European League game in front of the home crowd. In less than two hours they beat the Turkish national team in 4 sets (26-24, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22).
In the second game of the 2010 CEV European League played in Steyr, the Austrians entered the first technical time-out with an 8:7 lead despite some troubles finding their game in the beginning. Compared to yesterday, the Turkish team had difficulties with their serves and Austria was able to build up a two-point lead at 18:16. Although the Turks tied the score at 22, the Austrians kept their focus and won the set 26-24.
The Turks found their way back into the game in the second set, put the Austrians under pressure with their serves and by the second technical time-out, they had built up a lead of five points. Incited by the audience, the Austrians fought back and tied the score at 22. This time the Turks had the odds on their side and leveled the score in sets with a 25-23.
The third set was a close call with ups and downs on both sides. Both teams wanted to take over the lead, but in the end Michael Warm's team made the decisive points – 26:24 for Austria.
The fourth set was a close battle as well. At the score of 22:18 everyone started to believe in a sensation. Then the Austrians finally achieved their goal. In less than two hours they had defeated Turkey with a 25-22 in the last set.
Laimer (21), Schneider (15) and Gavan (10) were the top scorers for Austria tonight. Batur (26), Pezuk (16) and Kirici (12) topped the charts for Turkey.
Michael Warm, head coach of Austria, said after the match: “Last weeks’ hard work was rewarded today. We had very intense technical trainings the last nine weeks and although we didn't win too many games, we were able to play at a very good level. Especially Michael Laimer, who had been working very hard the past weeks, played very strong matches today and yesterday. In terms of the 2011 EuroVolley, we're still at the beginning of a very intense program in order to reach the quality of our opposing teams”.
Daniel Gavan, captain of Austria, added: “We played better today and reached our goal. Today's game bid a good farewell to Austria. We won the first and last game of this year's European League and played many games that are important for our match practice. Michael Laimer took a big step forward. We still have a long way to go until the EuroVolley 2011”.
Veljko Basic, head coach of Turkey: “Basically it was the same as yesterday, but we made many mistakes - especially in the fourth set. I think my team is very tired. Our problem was that we made the mistakes in the end of the sets. Now we want to prepare ourselves for the last games against Portugal”.
Turkey’s captain Sinan Cem Tanik concluded: “Today we didn't play as well as yesterday. Our serves were not good enough to put the Austrians under pressure with their attacks. The Austrians improved the reception, we tried to keep up, but made mistakes in the decisive moments”.

Olympic silver medalist Fabio Luiz to highlight CEV Satellite in Lausanne

Brazil’s Fabio Luiz, silver medalist at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and World champion back in 2005 together with former partner Marcio Araujo, is expected to be the main attraction of the CEV Satellite tournament that will run in Lausanne through next July 15-18. The Brazilian star indeed received a wild-card from CEV and will compete there pairing Bruno de Paula for the delight of hundreds of die-hard Beach Volleyball fans.
The event traditionally held in Lausanne is actually the “oldest” among the many Satellite tournaments being currently organized across the five Continental Confederations whom – starting from the 2009 season – FIVB transferred the responsibility and authority to stage such competitions.
The 21st edition of the Satellite tournament in Lausanne will take place in a very prestigious and fascinating location, namely the Place de la Navigation, which stands out as the real “heart” of that well-known and very sport-oriented Swiss city. A total of 34 teams registered for the event to represent 17 different countries, from Sweden to Portugal, plus Belgium, Switzerland and many more.
On the other hand, the traditional exhibition matches featuring some of the very best female Beach Volleyball duos have been cancelled since this year the organizers were struggling in trying to find an adequate number of truly competitive teams.
The kick-off of the Satellite will be celebrated on Thursday, July 15, in Bellerive where two more courts will be prepared and installed to host the matches of the Qualification as well as the first rounds of the Main Draw before finally moving to the Place de la Navigation for the last and most exciting stages of the competition.

Σημαντικές αλλαγές στην Ευρώπη

Σε δυο αλλαγές στον τρόπο διεξαγωγής των διοργανώσεων της προχώρησε η CEV, όπως ανακοινώθηκε στο περιθώριο της κλήρωσης. Το πρώτο αφορά στο γεγονός ότι καταργούνται τα φάιναλ -4 για τα CEV cup και Challenge cup κυρίως λόγω της αδυναμίας των ομάδων να αντεπεξέλθουν οικονομικά στη διοργάνωση τους. Ως εκ τούτου από τον πρώτο γύρο μέχρι τον τελικό θα έχουμε διπλές αναμετρήσεις εντός και εκτός έδρας. Το δεύτερο και πιο σημαντικό αφορά στον κανονισμό του «χρυσού σετ», που αλλάζει ξανά. Κάτι που γίνεται κάθε χρόνο μιας και οι της Ευρωπαϊκής ομοσπονδίας έχουν δοκιμάσει τα πάντα! Φέτος αυτό που θα ισχύει είναι πως όταν οι δυο ομάδες έχουν από μια νίκη στα δυο παιχνίδια, τότε θα κρίνεται η πρόκριση στο «χρυσό σετ» ανεξάρτητα από την αναλογία των σετ. GB captain Ben Pipes wants to hear some noise

Great Britain’s captain Ben Pipes is looking to the home crowd to inspire his team for this weekend's European League double-header with Spain at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. Pipes is looking to the British crowd to get behind his team the same way the samba beat inspires Spain on home soil. The GB team have witnessed the passion of the Spanish fans twice in the last two years on European League visits and would love to experience it again at the Final Four in Guadalajara.
But last weekend's double defeat by Romania has left the GB team playing catch-up as they seek to take the remaining spot. A double win over Spain is crucial to their hopes but GB has already won on Spanish soil - in Salamanca - this year.
"There are a few crucial points where the backing from the crowd can make a real difference," Pipes points out, "I know that there is still not a culture for volleyball in this country but I'm hoping that in the next two years towards the Olympics that education continues not only for us but for the public who come to watch our matches. Volleyball is a big sport and we have a team here who I know the public back and I know we'll eventually get the samba band we see in Spain, the 5,000 sell-outs in Poland and the air horns in Turkey - it's eventually going to come. I love playing in Britain and hopefully we can even see vuvuzelas at our games once the World Cup is over”.

Third level coaching course starts in Ankara

A 3rd level coaching course organized by the Turkish Volleyball Federation started today at the “Baskent” Volleyball Complex in Ankara. TVF President Mr. Erol Unal Karabiyik and TVF Education Committee Coordinator Prof. Dr. Caner Acikava gave a short briefing in the first day of classes.
Mr. Karabiyik stated: “The new educational program we worked out for Volleyball should be an example for other sports federations in our country. Here in Ankara we are educating the future coaches that will serve the Turkish Volleyball family in the upcoming years”.
On the other hand, Mr. Acikava added: “Being the first course with a new system, it may have some disadvantages. From this point of view it is both an opportunity and as it is a face to face study, it may push you a little bit. It can be considered as an intense program but this shouldn’t frighten you because it has been conceived according to intensive preliminary studies”.

With two more victories Portugal books ticket for final four in Guadalajara

Portugal pre-booked a ticket for the final four of the 2010 CEV European League cruising past Austria this weekend in Paso de Regua. The Portuguese are the only team that did not suffer any single loss in this year’s competition and join organizer Spain in the event scheduled for mid July in Guadalajara. Portugal clipped the first match in three straight sets (25-23, 28-26, 25-16) and needed four sets on Sunday to complete its perfect run.
Despite the fact that they presented a different line-up from their usual, the local team its winning streak in the 2010 season to a total of 13 matches out of the 14 so far played for the CEV European League and the CEV European Championship. Since this weekend the CEV European League matches were being held in Peso da Regua, the Portuguese Volleyball Federation decided to pay homage to Carina Ferreira, a Volleyball player of Clube Caça e Pesca e Alto Douro that was victim of a car accident and whose body was missing for almost a month, a drama that was followed emotionally by the Portuguese media. In this occasion, the Portuguese Federation presented to the parent’s of the deceased player a photo of the senior women club C.C. Pesca Alto Douro, signed by all the players of the men’s senior national team. A minute of silence was observed in memory of Carina Ferreira.
With a very different line-up from their usual – Carlos Fidalgo, Manuel Silva, Frederico Siqueira and the libero Joao Fidalgo played from the beginning -, Portugal set the tempo for most of the opening set (16:11 at the second technical break). Watching that his team couldn’t shorten the distance (20:15), Austrian coach Michael Warm stopped the Portuguese spread using a time-out request with the strategy paying off, with Gavan and Philip Schneider being able to dangerously approach to the leaders (20:19). An ace kept the “suspense” about the winner (23:23), but Valdir Sequeira scored an attack and Schneider, with a failed spike, granted Portugal the final point of the set (25-23). In the second set the story was quite different. Austria arrived in advantage (8:7) at the first technical time-out, with a block from Gavan, but taking well advantage of the Portuguese difficulties in blocking, stretched the lead even more for the second stop (16:12). The instruction received from coach Juan Diaz were productive for the Portuguese players. Portugal awakened and after tying at 16, went ahead on the score (18:17). Gavan tied shortly after at 19 and walked his team ahead (21:20), but Joao Malveiro tied with a tip and granted Portugal once again the lead with a block shared by Flavio Cruz (22:21). A block from Simon Fruhbauer pulled Austria once again to the front (23:22), but Frederico Siqueira, with an ace allowed Portugal to win also this section of the game 28-26. The Portuguese team seemed unstoppable in the third set (5:1 and 8:2). Austria reacted, mainly through Schneider and reduced the difference (6:9), but Flavio Cruz and teammates, driven by Manuel Silva’s stamina, reached the second technical time-out with a precious advantage (16:11). Aware that they would have to play all their cards, Austria, with Gavan serving and Schneider in attack, decreased the gap (14:16), but Portugal went back charging and Joao Malveiro scored, categorically, the point nr 19 (19:14), indicating the path for the Portuguese triumph. Disoriented, Austria “offered”, through Thomas Zass, 3 points to Portugal (22:16), that closed the triumph in the match with an uneven 25-16. Flavio Cruz, with 14, was the best scorer of the match, followed by the Austrian Philip Schneider and Thomas Zass, both with 13.
Austrian coach Michael Warm said after the match: “We played a very good match. I believe that the team is growing, but on the other side there was a very strong team. We played with much discipline, but that wasn’t enough to win”. Portuguese mentor Juan Diaz added: “I am very pleased with the result. It’s necessary to observe that we didn’t play with the usual line-up, but the players that played maintained the team at a good level. In the most critical moments of the game, the team always reacted very well”. Captain Manuel Silva concluded: “It was a very good match and not easy. We were a little bit down in the first sets, but we were able to turn around. I believe that I played a good match, mainly taking into consideration that I didn’t play for a while”.

Ανακοινώθηκε από την Ευρωπαϊκή Συνομοσπονδία (CEV) το πρόγραμμα του Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ για την περίοδο 2010-11.

Ο πρωταθλητής Ολυμπιακός θα ξεκινήσει την προσπάθειά του εκτός έδρας με αντίπαλο την Μπούντβα. Αντιθέτως, ο κυπελλούχος Παναθηναϊκός την πρώτη αγωνιστική θα υποδεχθεί την Ντινάμο Μόσχας.

Οι "ελληνικοί" αντίπαλοι στο Champions League

Ευνοϊκή για τα ελληνικά χρώματα ήταν η κλήρωση των ομίλων του Champions League στους άνδρες. Τόσο ο πρωταθλητής Ολυμπιακός, όσο και ο κυπελλούχος Παναθηναϊκός έχουν ελπίδες να περάσουν στην επόμενη φάση.
Στην κλήρωση που έγινε στη Βιέννη οι "ερυθρόλευκοι" βρέθηκαν στον 3ο όμιλο μαζί με την πολωνική Γιαστρζέμπσκι (σ.σ. ομάδα που αντιμετώπισε πέρυσι ο Παναθηναϊκός και νίκησε δύο φορές), τη σλοβένικη Μπλεντ που συμμετείχε στο φάιναλ φορ της διοργάνωσης και την πρωταθλήτρια Μαυροβούνιου, Μπούντβα.
O Παναθηναϊκός θα βρει απέναντι του στον 9ο όμιλο τη ρωσική Ντινάμο Μόσχας, την ομάδα που απέκλεισε τόσο τους "πράσινους", όσο και τους "ερυθρόλευκους" από τη διοργάνωση, τη βελγική Κνακ Ρούζελαρ του πρώην πασαδόρου του "τριφυλλιού", Φρανκ Ντεπέστελε και την αυστριακή Τιρόλ Ίνσμπρουκ.
Στον επόμενο γύρο περνούν οι δύο πρώτες ομάδες και ο καλύτερος τρίτος από τους έξι ομίλους.

Bulgarian Beach Volleyball tour to start today in Kardzhali

 In the city of Kardzhali, excitement and tension are building up before the official start of the M-Tel Beach Masters Tour in Bulgaria. Preparations are almost complete and the players are training before the coming battles.
The first event of this year’s tour will take place in the famous arena Kardzhali in front of 3’000 exalted fans at the city considered the birthplace of the Bulgarian Beach Volleyball and home of some of the best players in the country. The local heroes Konstantin Mitev and Neven Neshev, as well as Nikolay Kolev and Andrey Nikolov, expect tough competition in a tournament that would shed light on the distribution of power before the key event in Bulgaria for 2010, the CEV Challenger presented by M-Tel to be played in Varna next July 14-18.
The national tournament in Kardzhali begins on Friday, June 25, featuring 12 male and 8 female teams in the main draw. Expectations are high and everyone is looking forward to an exciting weekend of Beach Volleyball actions.

ΤΣΑΜΠΙΟΝΣ ΛΙΓΚ: Κληρώνει για Ολυμπιακό και Παναθηναϊκό

Η κλήρωση των ομίλων του Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ ανδρών θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Παρασκευή 25 Ιουνίου στη Βιέννη στις 21.15 (ώρα Ελλάδας). Στην κληρωτίδα θα μπουν και οι δύο εκπρόσωποι του ελληνικού βόλεϊ ο πρωταθλητής Ολυμπιακός και ο κυπελλούχος Παναθηναϊκού, οι οποίοι δεν θα βρεθούν αντιμέτωποι στη φάση των ομίλων.

New clash between Serbian coaches in Pool A

Last year, for the very first edition of the CEV European League, Serbia and Bulgaria played in the same preliminary Pool before advancing to the final four. Serbia won three out of four matches: one in Gabrovo (Bulgaria) and the other two at home in Obrenovac. Serbia then continued its march to clip the title at the final four staged in Kayseri (Turkey) whereas Bulgaria finished third there, after defeating France in the consolation final.
After four matches in this year’s CEV European League, Serbia and Bulgaria are tied on the top of the standings, both with four victories and without having dropped a single set. However, the Bulgarian team is currently topping the charts thanks to a better point ratio. The double-header scheduled for this weekend and starring these teams will also feature another clash between two Serbian coaches, namely Zoran Terzic and Dragan Nesic.
“These matches with Bulgaria will be completely different from the ones we had in the previous weekends. Although we play at home, we are not the favourites and I would say that we have 50:50 chances to win. Of course, if we play hard and we are motivated, and if we fulfil everything we practiced in our training sessions, then I think our chances are slightly higher than those of the Bulgarians. But, we have to wait and see. I know that we will be supported by our incredible fans, and we will do our best not to disappoint them” comments local mentor Zoran Terzic.
Serbia and Bulgaria played also four matches so far at the European Championships. The Serbian team won only once, namely in the final round of the 2007 competition jointly organized in Belgium and Luxembourg.
